The science can be complex. Understanding it shouldn't be.
From our teenage years through to later life, we're continually learning, experiencing and adapting.
Whether we're studying, working for someone else, running or growing our own business, taking on a new project, raising a family, caring for others, enjoying retirement or simply navigating life's ups and downs, understanding a little more about how our bodies and minds work can be useful.
Our age, experiences and circumstances may differ, but we all have something in common: a nervous system responding to the world around us.
At MayStan, we make the science behind our nervous system, breathing and behaviour understandable, accessible and practical for everyday life.
You don't need a degree in neuroscience. Just a little curiosity.
The science behind our approach
01
Nervous System & State
Our autonomic nervous system helps regulate many of the processes happening within our bodies, often without conscious effort.
It responds to internal and external demands and plays an important role in how we experience and respond to everyday situations.
Understanding these responses can help us recognise our current state and explore practical approaches to self-regulation.
02
Neuroscience & Behaviour
Our brains are constantly interpreting information, drawing on previous experiences and helping us navigate everyday life.
Attention, habitual patterns, emotions and learned responses can all influence how we interpret and react to situations.
Recognising these patterns can create opportunities to respond differently rather than simply following familiar habits.
03
Breathing & Physiology
Breathing is closely connected with our physiology and autonomic regulation.
The way we breathe can influence aspects of our bodily state, while our current state can also influence our breathing.
MayStan introduces simple breathing awareness and practical techniques, helping individuals experience and observe their responses for themselves.
04
The Whole-Person Perspective
No two people arrive in exactly the same state. The biopsychosocial model offers a useful way of understanding why, recognising that biological factors, psychological experiences and social circumstances can interact to influence how we feel, think and respond.
Our physical health, sleep, hormones, thoughts, past experiences, relationships and environment may all play a part. These influences rarely operate independently, and their significance differs from one person to another.
That's why MayStan begins by understanding the individual and their circumstances. The nervous system is part of this wider picture — a practical place to start, not a single explanation for everything.
05
Learning & Adaptation
Our capacity to learn and develop skills continues throughout life.
Through awareness, experience, appropriate repetition and reflection, we can explore different responses and develop practical skills.
The aim isn't perfection. It's discovering what works, understanding when it helps and adapting as we learn.
Understanding the evidence
Science-informed. Curious. Always learning.
Scientific understanding continues to evolve, and we believe it's important to remain curious and open to new findings. Our approach draws on established research in relevant areas of physiology, neuroscience, breathing, behaviour and learning.
However, not every technique has the same level of evidence, and individual responses can vary. We distinguish between:
- Findings supported by scientific research.
- Areas where evidence is still emerging or mixed.
- Practical observations from our sessions and programmes.
- Simplified teaching models used to make complex ideas easier to understand.
An explanation that helps us understand something is not necessarily a complete scientific account of how it works.
How we observe individual progress
MayStan combines personal feedback with simple practical measurements where appropriate. These can include observations relating to breathing patterns, breath-hold tolerance and heart-rate responses during guided exercises.
These measurements provide useful individual reference points. They do not, by themselves, establish a diagnosis, prove a particular physiological mechanism or guarantee lasting improvement.
We also listen to how people describe their experiences and how useful they find the techniques in their everyday lives.
The purpose is to help people recognise patterns, explore their responses and review their own progress — not to reduce a human being to a set of numbers.
Our commitment to evidence
Understand. Question. Explore.
We welcome thoughtful questions about the science behind our work. Our commitment is to:
- Use science-informed education responsibly.
- Explain complex subjects in accessible language.
- Distinguish evidence from interpretation and simplified teaching models.
- Recognise the limitations of individual techniques and measurements.
- Continue reviewing relevant research as scientific understanding develops.
MayStan provides education and practical self-regulation experiences. It does not replace medical assessment, diagnosis, treatment or psychological therapy.
Understanding is a starting point.
Knowing a little more about how we function can help us make sense of our experiences. But understanding is only the beginning.
MayStan combines education with practical experiences and techniques that people can explore, adapt and carry into everyday life.
Better awareness. More choice.
